JPG vs PNG: Which Image Format Should You Use?
JPG and PNG are the two most common image formats on the web, and picking the right one makes a real difference to file size and quality.
JPG: best for photos
JPG uses lossy compression tuned for photographic detail — gradients, textures, and complex color. It typically produces much smaller files than PNG for the same photo, which is why it's the default for photography.
PNG: best for graphics and transparency
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it the better choice for logos, icons, screenshots, and graphics with flat colors or sharp text edges. The tradeoff is larger file sizes, especially for photographic content.
What about WebP?
WebP is a newer format that can offer both lossy and lossless compression, often at a smaller file size than JPG or PNG for equivalent quality, with broad support across modern browsers.
Quick rule of thumb
- Photo or photo-like image → JPG or WebP
- Logo, icon, or image needing transparency → PNG or WebP
- Screenshot with text → PNG for crisp edges, or a lightly compressed JPG for smaller size
